Cultural note:  Iwa is Hawaiian word for thief and is applied to the the Great Frigate Bird (wingspan up to 90") due to the bird's propensity for stealing food from other birds, in mid-air.  The Oahu North Shore town of Haleiwa is named for the Iwa combined with the word "Hale" meaning house.  Haleiwa, thus, means "House of the Great Frigate Bird." Like many seabirds, the Iwa are long-lived birds, with a lifespan of 30–40 years.
